16-APR-2014

His Excellence Robin Nair, the UAE Ambassador of the Republic of Fiji visited Mr Mohammed Al Habtoor, Vice Chairman and CEO of the Al Habtoor Group on Monday April 14, 2014. Also present was Paul Rayner, Advisor to the Chairman; K.P. Rajan, Group Financial Advisor and Ahmed Al Otaiba, Director/Member of the Board.

The visit comes ahead of a visit in May by a Fijian delegation. The business delegation will be looking at business opportunities between Fiji and the UAE, and advertising the island country to the emirates. Fiji is eyeing foreign direct investment in sectors like tourism, mining and agriculture.

Mohammed Al Habtoor said, “The UAE offers an abundance of opportunities.  We are a safe haven for investors.”

The Republic of Fiji, which comprises an archipelago of more than 300 tropical islands, is one of the most developed economies in the South Pacific. The economy is expected to grow 2.8 per cent this, according to the Asian Development Bank.

After the meeting, Ambassador Nair attended a lunch hosted by Khalaf Al Habtoor, Chairman of the Al Habtoor Group, which was attended by Ambassadors from Ireland, Germany and Russia.  He urged Mr Al Habtoor to consider investing in the Fijian hospitality sector, which makes up a large proportion of the economy.

HE Nair was appointed by the President of the Republic of Fiji as Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary in July 2012 to serve as Fiji’s first Ambassador to the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) Countries.
